Yummy and Healthy

It's cold. It's sweet. It's creamy. And that burst of fruit-filled, nutty, or chocolate-chunky flavor can be incredibly refreshing when the steamy heat of midday starts to weigh you down. As far as I'm concerned, ice cream is summer's most delightful treat.

Not all ice cream, however, is perfect ice cream. Texture matters as much as flavor. Nothing's worse than an icy scoop, or one that tastes grainy, syrupy, or artificial.

So, what's the secret to decadent ice cream that tastes like a dream and feels like a silky cloud melting in your mouth? High-quality ingredients, for one, are essential, plus fine-tuned techniques that combine ingredients in just the right proportions with a perfect amount of air whipped in.

"There's a lot of science behind it," says David Smith. He's a food scientist at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.

For ice-cream manufacturers, the science of ice cream matters a lot. According to the International Ice Cream Association, people in the United States spend more than $20 billion on cold, creamy treats each year. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says that, in 2004, each person ate an average of about 21.5 quarts of ice cream.

To satisfy the population's unceasing demand for the sweet stuff, companies are constantly on the lookout for ways to make better-tasting ice cream that lasts longer, costs less, and is more nutritious than current varieties.

In the battle against ice crystals, one recent avenue of research has focused on molecules called antifreeze proteins. Found in certain types of fish and plants that live in extremely cold environments, these proteins prevent ice crystals from forming, which keeps the organisms from freezing to death. Perhaps they could do the same for ice cream. The technique isn't yet practical, however.

In the meantime, many companies are trying hard to make ice cream that is both yummy and healthy. In its traditional form, ice cream is loaded with calories and fat. It's the fat that carries the flavor and produces the smooth texture. "You've got to have fat," Smith says.

All that fat, however, is a problem when it comes to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and other weight-related illnesses. So far, no one has managed to create a low-fat version of ice cream that tastes as good as the real thing. That's because normal ice cream is about 60 to 62 percent water and 10 to 20 percent butterfat, Smith says. (Ten percent is the minimum amount of butterfat a product must contain to qualify as true ice cream.)

Once you start taking out fats, water content can shoot up to 70 to 78 percent, Smith says. The more water a frozen dessert contains, the quicker it turns to ice and slush, and the less flavor it has.

While it's not a good idea to have sundaes and milkshakes with every meal, a cool cone may be one of the most enjoyable parts of summer, and it's not necessary to give up the habit altogether. When you do indulge, just make sure to savor every bite. Appreciating it fully might make the experience even more special.

"Ice cream is unique because you don't get it every day," Smith says. "You eat it on special occasions or when you go to the park. It's usually a happy time." (sciencenewsforkids)

Robert Downey Jr. Thanked BK

Robert Downey Jr. has publicly thanked Burger King for helping him overcome his problems with addiction. The fast food chain, he says, also helped to resurrect his career.

The fast food epiphany happened in 2003 when the "Iron Man" star was driving a car piled with "tons of f---ing dope," Downey Jr. told Britain's Empire magazine. The actor decided to pull over for a burger and everything changed.

"I have to thank Burger King," he said. "It was such a disgusting burger I ordered. I had that, and this big soda, and I thought something really bad was going to happen." Downey Jr. says he then tossed all of his drugs into the ocean, deciding right then and there to clean up his act.
Downey Jr. hints that a fateful moment in "Iron Man," when his character Tony Stark requests a cheeseburger from Burger King after being released from his captors, is a reference to his own experiences. (nydailynews)

When I asked the girl at the Burger King Counter if the Veggie Burger on the menu was any good I never expected this cute, young girl working the counter at a burger joint to reply:

"I'm a vegetarian. I love it. It's better with cheese."

A vegetarian working at Burger King seems like an oxymoron, but it's okay. There's no such thing as Tofu King yet.

Since I became a vegetarian a month ago, I have been doing well with finding options at every place we dine. I have been avoiding fast food as much as possible anyway, but one late night we were starving. I was expecting to get a fish sandwich (I didn't rule that out of my diet yet), but when I saw that Burger King offered a BK Veggie Burger from Morningstar, I was thrilled! McDonalds, which has many options to healthy eating, has not yet added a veggie burger to their grilled selection, and Wendy's does not even offer a fish sandwich anymore.

So, I was very delighted to learn that Burger King now offers something exclusively for vegetarians. When Dave and I got to our booth and unwrapped our sandwiches, I realized that my BK Veggie Burger didn't look that much different than his Whopper. They both were on the same bun, topped with lettuce, tomato, onions and mayo. Only, his patty was made of meat and mine with a slew of yummy vegetables.

The BK Veggie Burger had visible veggies, and was just fabulous. My favorite veggie burger by far is Morningstar's Black Bean Burgers, however this version at Burger King was great. On the side, I had an order of Burger King's brand new cheese filled tater tots, which were to die for. They were oozing with melted cheese and the chunky potato filling was tasty. I topped off my quick meal with a caramel swirl cheesecake. I forgot how great Burger King's cheesecakes were! (associatedcontent)

* Cingur, 100 gram, rebus, goreng, potong
* Tahu, 2 buah, goreng, potong
* Tempe, 5 buah, goreng, potong
* Mentimun, 1 buah, kupas dan potong
* Kerupuk melinjo, 50 gram, goreng
* Kerupuk udang, 50 gram, goreng
* Kacang tanah, 100 gram, goreng
* Pisang batu, 2 buah
* Gula merah, secukupnya
* Garam, secukupnya
* Air asam, secukupnya
* Petis udang, 50 gram
* Air, secukupnya

Bahan Soto :

Cara memasak Rujak Soto :

1. Bumbu rujak : haluskan kacang tanah, pisang batu, gula merah, air asam, garam dan petis. Tuang air secukupnya, aduk rata, sisihkan.
2. Soto : Rebus air hingga mendidih dengan api sedang, sisihkan.
3. Panaskan minyak, tumis bumbu halus, daun salam, daun jeruk dan serai hingga harum. Masukkan bawang perai, aduk rata.
4. Masukkan jeroan dan iga sapi ke dalam bumbu tumis, masak hingga berubah warna.
5. Tuang air, masak hingga mendidih dan semua bahan matang. Kecilkan api, angkat.

Cara Penyajian Rujak Soto :

1. Atur semua bahan rujak diatas piring saji, tambahkan bumbu rujak secukupnya.
2. Masukkan seledri dan bawang goreng, tambahkan soto secukupnya.
3. Sajikan dengan emping melinjo dan kerupuk udang.

Sate Buntel that Shake your Tongue
