History of Vermouth

The most important spices for Artemisia absinthium vermouth is a shrub that grows yearly in Europe and Asia. This plant leaves soaked in wine, and Hippocrates in 500 BC reumatisme recommend it as a medicine and jaundice. At Renaissance Ages, vermouth sold in pharmacies as medicine in the UK.

The world's largest manufacturer of vermouth Martini & Rossi is the origin of Torino. Martini & Rossi started production since 1863, while Cinzano began production in 1816.

Initially, vermouth is made from red wine, but since around 1800, wine makers in the area of Marseille started making white vermouth and white wine. In 1813, spice expert named Joseph Noilly started making Dry vermouth or French vermouth. In 1855, the son of Joseph Noilly Prat named Claudius produce brand Noilly Prat.
